Ancient magic isn't necessarily weak by modern standards. While technology in the real world undoubtedly improves over time. How often do we see the old spells being the strongest in fiction? Today's sorcery might be more efficient, but it might also be less destructive. For example. How often are characters searching for that all important spell or magical item that has been lost in time?
Let us say there was an all powerful sage or priest who wielded incredible power, so much that people couldn't fathom it's existence. However, he/she didn't know how to properly develop his/her power for there was no guide. A student learning from a teacher would have no problem because the student was taught. Both, however, have shown that they could develop power on their own. The student is a big boost at the start of this task, and may have taken his powers further more than the originator therefore.
A more clearer example would be when the television/radio was invented. It was rather poor, and has sinced evolved.
Bottom line is,
Magic and power is generally based on intelligence; what are they capable of learning, and how well do they know how to use it.
Any thoughts and/or contradictions?
