Though twilight was a great book, Im tired of people becoming vampires just because of it, and it's only because of the screwed up movie. Now there are all these preppy people shopping at Hot Topic just because of it.
Its not the first time I've seen this type of reaction. Anne Rice helped turn vampires from something dark into romance novel heroes. There was the big resurgence, in the early 90s when Interview with the Vampire hit the big screen; now we have Twilight. What I think is a tad ironic is that unlike Anne Rice Stephanie Meyer had no interest in vampires until the idea for a story came to her in a dream.
When a highly popular vampire book/ movie comes along people crawl out of the woodwork either claiming to be vampires, or asking to be turned. *head to desk*
Due to modern depiction and general misconception, vampires, (more often than not) are all seen as beautiful, possess special abilities and are of course immortal. Alot of people are,not surprisingly, drawn to those factors; plus its an escape from their otherwise mundane world.
I've had people ask me,"Gee, it must be cool being a vampire? Well I assure you its not.It does'nt somehow automatically solve all your problems and it can actually make life a lot harder than you might think.
You have cravings, a need to find energy, odd sensitivities, abilities you may or may not understand or can't control, etc...
If you enjoy a book or movie or like playing Vampire:The Masquerade, great, but vampirism is not a fad. It's not a trend, a manner of dress, or something you'll grow out of one day. It's a very real and serious part of some people's lives.
You put the issue nicely. All these "fans" of vampires belittle the very real suffering of people who actually have to deal w the realities on a daily basis. In some ways, it's awesome to be alittle above the petty human world. In other ways, it truly is an eternal curse, a condemnation to semi-living hell.
I agree with you. I'm a vampire because i've been obsessed with them since an interview with a vampire. And lestat is my man lol. Twilight was good in a love story sense but as a vamp flick it sucked. Although the books were good the author's talented no doubt.
Wow victor i think you put it very bluntly. But very honest too. I guess i gotta swallow my words about interview with a vamp, i was only 8 when i read it so forgive me if i added to your grief about people making vampirism a fad. I wish i could be damned for eternity, because its a hell of alot better then the life i lead now.
No worries, I appreciate your understanding ;) I have a penchant for being brutally honest but if it helps just one person to put things in perspective its well worth the effort.
Fair enough. . . But i'd like to meet an actual vampire since i don't seem worthy enough to be one. Are there many of you out there? Is it safe to just meet one without ending up as dinner?
preps...well, they can be like that. i mean i am thankful for the twilight books: they introduced me to the wonderful world of vampire literature altogether, which i'm obssesed with more than rob pattinson even. i'm sure that some new fad will come into the light soon though, and they'll take off their fake fangs (which aren't even the book or movie, ugh) and run towards that, or whatever Hot Topic decides to make merchandise out of. i like to write vampire stories, but i think i'll wait until they're out-of-fashion to actually publish one. following along with a trend can be kind of hectic after a while. i got introduced to twilight from one of the first fans, not the commercials, after all.
oh, btw, has any1 seen the south park episode where they made fun of the "vampire" kids (aka, rick kids with nothing better to do but wear white makeup and drink some sort of cranberry juice) who shopped @ hot topic? i absolutely love that episode!
