How magic actually works is a topic more for a atomic physicist then a witch. Magic is the manipulation of the properties and governing forces of all things be they spirit based matter or the material world all things have substance except shadows (will go into more detail on this later).
Life it's self is comprised of one true constant some would say all things is matter and energy this is wrong. Energy is the fundamental force to all matter, without energy matter would not exist. Magic is learning to control this energy, but often people think much too big a scale or too logically about it, magic is more analytical pull one brick at the right place and the tower will crumble chain reactions atomic physics. Atoms stack together held by protons and neutrons, the things of stars.. Carl Sagan once said "we are all made of star stuff." Smart man, because all things where created from that same spec, all the matter in the universe from one gravitational anomaly infinitely dense infinitely spec.
When you learn to see the world as this ever connected mass that all things came from the same point in space that all things are part of one another you start to see the connections the small parts within the parts the ever prescient driving forces that keep things together or apart.
When you learn to think in terms of just moving these when you stop trying to move the tower and start moving the bricks then you realize that things are a lot simpler then you make them out to be. There was a interesting line from a movie I once heard "Do not try to bend the spoon because that is impossible instead realize the truth, there is no spoon." While this doesn't apply to our reality it does add one bit of incite on people who try to do things on too large a scale when in reality it's the small things that move us.
The world is full of color and life, but all life shares a fundamental means, energy moves it be it flesh or a plant these things are driven by reactions of energy pushing muscles or driving other means of motion. You look at you're own hand and think how complex it is to move just one finger all the motions all the energy driving those muscles and tendons magic real magic is like that. A simple action building on more and more complex actions.
When you think to yourself I want this to move, you'll never make it move you know why? Because moving the object is impossible but what if you look at the elements around it what if you took the air molecules and stir them up and used them to lift the object rather then try to make the object itself move.
When you want to hurt something, for me I picture the air the energy around it in it forming a blade sharp as a sword long as I make it and I throw that blade and watch it cut like steel threw anything I want, that is the properties of real Magic, to use it beyond just thinking to use you're own body to draw the energy to the shape when you use you're mind and soul to form it and give it weight and power. These are how real magic is preformed.
When you wish to burn something it's not just a matter of understanding what fire is it's a matter of understanding what makes fire burn, a fire is started when molecules begin to move faster and faster creating micro sized friction and heat up hotter and hotter until they show flame, a visual reaction of all the heat and fire burning threw the object. When you excite the molecules enough when you use you're own energy to start this fire you can burn anything and you can make it burn out every molecule until there is nothing left but spent coal.
This conduces my fundamental functions of magic from a physical point of view.
