Zach starred at the night sky; his eyes sensed something near by, something powerful. He knew something would happen but he wish he knew more, his third eye was closed, whatever could do that was more powerful but he also sensed that the creature didn’t realize it. Zach’s eyes darted into the alley; he saw a woman running, her heart beating fast and her breath rapid. Zach jumped into the alley; he landed without hurting himself and started running towards the girl. The girl turned the corner and bumped into Zach, she screamed and tried to run away but he pulled her close and hugged her to his cold, unbeating chest. She calmed a bit but was still crying, her hands shaking and rolled into fists. Zach told her calming words and she slowly fell asleep to the sound of his voice. Zach looked at her unconscious, tear stained face and smiled. Even completely frightened she looked beautiful. Zach picked her up and super sped to her home. It was an old white farm house, Zach growled, he didn’t want to bring her here, he wanted to keep her safe…forever. Zach knew if he did that and she found out what he was that she would be more frightened then she was in this home. Zach went to the back of the house; he jumped inside and laid her down on the soft bed. Zack wiped her tears; he kissed her brow and moved her hair out of her eyes. He leaned further and went to kiss her on the mouth when there was a rapid knock on her door.
Lisa sat up and groaned, she was just getting to the good part, and she covered up her notebook and put it in the drawer.
“Yeah?” She asked knowing exactly who it was.
Alba, her older sister popped her head in, her summer red hair was in a fancy bun and she was wearing a black evening dress.
“Hey I’m going for my date, I’ll be back in a few hours,” said Alba.
“Who is it this time? The jock from your university or the lawyer from the big firm?”
Alba smiled and shook her head, “Neither. It’s an English teacher from an elementary school.”
“Ok, bye,” said Lisa dully.
Alba smiled sadly and left, closing the door. Lisa took out her notebook and was about to write more but she didn’t feel like it. Her muse was gone. She groaned in fury and rolled around on her bed banging it with her fists likes an 11 year old having a tantrum. Just then the lights turned off. Lisa stopped; she was very quiet and didn’t move. Lisa got up and decided to check the breaker box; she went to her door, opened it slowly and looked down the dark hallway. There were shadows everywhere, Lisa slowly entered the hall and went down towards the basement; ready to jump at anything or any sound. Lisa went to the living room to find a flashlight and then go down to the basement to switch the breaker. She went to the desk drawer and pulled out a flash light; she clicked it on and turned around. Lisa saw Alba, covered in blood; she wasn’t smiling and her skin was grey like concrete. Lisa’s scream was stuck in her throat; Alba fell down and onto the floor. Lisa gasped; she bent over and went to touch Alba when cold hands grabbed her warm ones. Lisa looked up into the face of a saddened one.
“It’s not real,” said Zach.
Lisa looked again and Alba’s body was gone, Lisa gasped and Zach stood up still holding her hands, she also stood and looked at Zach. Zach held her close and she started to cry, Lisa didn’t know who this man was but she knew she was safe. Lisa did look over her shoulder and saw Alba but she was dead in the kitchen with a knife in her head. Lisa grabbed her stomach and started retching. Zach looked away and stopped breathing. He wished he could help her but there was no other way. Lisa stopped and wiped her lips, she stood up and Zach was gone, Lisa sighed, part of it was a dream and part of it wasn’t. Lisa went to the phone and dialed 911, she told them the lights went off and she found Alba, the operator told her to wait outside and to make sure she was alright. Lisa hung up; she grabbed a lavender sweater and went outside. She sat by the door and waited as she started to cry. Why did this have to happen to her? Who was that man and what did he want? And was he the same man she saw when she was six?
6 months later…
Lisa looked out the window of the car at her new neighborhood, it was very different, it was all farms like land, and all the houses were white and didn’t match but were the same style. Lisa’s social worker had finally found a relative, Uncle Jasper, he was 56. Single and lived alone. He didn’t even have a pet. Lisa wished so many things didn’t have to change. In the last 6 months Lisa had moved three times, she dyed her hair dark brown, she changed her clothing to gothic and slutty, she started cutting and started a journal. Lisa’s thoughts were interrupted by the kind voice of her social worker, Sherryl.
“Lisa, honey, we’re here,” said Sherryl.
Lisa sighed and got out of the car, she looked at the white farm house, and it looked like it was falling apart.
Sherryl stood beside her and put her arms around her, “So…what do you think?”
Lisa rolled her eyes, “My garage was bigger. You know I can take care of myself.”
“Well you can’t do that until your 18,” said Sherryl, “We’ve been through this before. You need a parent or guardian to sign for the money.”
“I have no parents!” yelled Lisa as she held back her tears, “I’m fine. Just go.”
Sherryl huffed and got back in the car; Lisa took out her bag of her valuables and clothes and marched to the front door as Sherryl left. Lisa looked over her shoulder and watched as the small blue car went down the road and then turned the corner, disappearing. Lisa looked back and knocked on the door harshly, she waited a few seconds and an older man came to the door. He just starred at her grumpily at her and said nothing.
“Well?” He croaked a few minutes after silence.
Lisa looked at his unfeeling blue eyes, “I’m your niece, Lisa.”
Uncle Jasper huffed angrily, “Oh right the rich orphan well get inside. Sorry my “accommodations” aren’t like what they were for you.”
Lisa already knew she would hate her last year here. Lisa went inside, it entered the hall which separated the living room and kitchen, and there were stairs ahead and a back door. Uncle Jasper went to an orange striped chair and sat down; he picked up a paper and started reading. Lisa waited for him to say something or at least tell her where her bedroom was. Lisa turned around and went to go upstairs when he finally said something. It wasn’t nice but at least it was something.
“Where do you think your going?” yelled Uncle Jasper.
Lisa turned back around, “Um…to the bathroom, I have been sweating for the last three hours.”
Uncle Jasper grumbled something and Lisa went upstairs, she walked down the hall and saw a big bedroom that she knew was his and went to the other end and went inside her bedroom. It was small, very simple and plain ugly. It had a small single bed which had white painted iron bed frames, it looked uncomfortable and there was no blanket. The walls had yellow wallpaper which was old and falling off, there was a window with a sill but no curtains or blinds and the windows were falling off the hinges. Lisa sighed and sat on the bed which creaked loudly, she knew she had to make some changes.
Over the next few weeks Lisa learned many things about her uncle. One, never talk to him. Lisa was thinking of trying to find out if he was from her mother’s or father’s side but Uncle Jasper grumbled something and then yelled out that they both were insane for moving so far and that’s why they died. Two, never ask him for anything. Lisa wanted to redecorate her bedroom and wondered if she could have a few dollars to buy some paint and a blanket and pillows. Uncle Jasper yelled about how she should have a job and how when he was a child he used to have a job and then he fell asleep because of his meds. Thirdly, Uncle Jasper was a total grump and that anything you did would make him mad. Lisa wrote in her journal about how Uncle Jasper treated her and tried to call Sherryl but Uncle Jasper didn’t have a phone. Lisa made a list; she woke up at 10am, dressed and walked to town. The town, New Haven was a small town but had mostly everything you would ever need. Lisa went to the paint store, she bought #77 lavender purple paint, she went to the hardware store and bought a set of screwdrivers, screws, window cleanser, floor polish and then went to Zellers and bought white curtains, a nice evergreen rug, dark red sheets, white pillows and a black comforter. Lisa charged them to Uncle Jasper’s bank card and brought them home. Uncle Jasper was gone for the evening so Lisa had the house to herself for once. Lisa went upstairs and moved everything out, she painted the walls after stripping the wallpaper, she then took off the bed frames, threw them out, redressed the bed and put some valuables on the small dresser she had. She put the windows back on; she cleaned them with the cleanser, polished the floor and was finally finished. Lisa wrote in her journal about everything she did and was very excited because tomorrow she had school at New Haven High.
