THE PRAYER OF ELIZABETH
Come to me clouds
May you rise as an evil storm
Born to rip them open
Let the cover of the night bear
Witness and destroy those
Who resist so they shall harm me not
Let the blood of many cleanse me
Preserving beauty eternal
I pray you
A truth comes out when it must
A dream comes true when it will.
Though the world turn to ash and dust,
A secret’s a secret still.
WHEN WILL A DREAM
BE THWARTED,
NO MATTER WHAT
DUES WERE PAID?
WHEN IS THE TRUTH
DISTORTED
AND A CONFIDENCE
BETRAYED?
Soon or late, each new frontier
Yields: Forefathers braved the sea.
With scythe and plow, the pioneers
Broke the land. Technology
Tamed communication. Now,
We settlers seek a wilder place
To bridle with our rough know-how:
The midnight prairie miles of space.
Terran-born, we hopefully
Spread our nets for lights afar,
And catch the moon. Our sons will be
Moonchildren, and snare the stars.
Night of crystal, day of gold,
Goddess, in your arms enfold
Soldier, servant, saint and sinner—
Spring and summer, fall and winter.
Crystal midnight, golden dawn.
Flawlessly the days flow on,
Filled with pure ecstatic light—
Fiery morning, icy night.
Goddess, give us star and sun
To guide us through our mortal run.
Sweetly are the secrets told—
Wrapt in crystal, limned in gold.
You, with awe and love.
Thank you for coming and finding me.
And for showing me the way.
It was the ride of a lifetime, the best I've ever had.
