Classically dragons were dinosaurs that survived whatever it was that wiped out most of them. Some were large and some were not. However they were rather easy picking to kill because of their slow nature, lack of intelligence, and large size. And so most of them were wiped out. An easy example of a scientific dragon would the Lochness Monster.
