Peta had been dreaming about guns.
There was an icon of the Virgin Mary on the wall that came with the room. Peta concentrated on it as he got dressed to relax because he was nervous and lost in the mornings without knowing why.
He wandered from his room down the corridor and knocked on a door. ``Yeah'''' came a girl's voice.
``Troy. Peta.''
``Oh. Ok.'' The door opened a little. A girl dressed in jeans, t shirt and crimson bandanna smiled small lipstick on pale skin missing the night in a late morning weariness smile - I mean, she hadn't slept a while but her lips were still bright artificial expensive colour - said to Peta, ``Hi...so - I thought you you'd be at your work today.''
``Not today, its my day off. Is Raz in''''
``No.''
A cat ran down the corridor and they both watched it go by.
Troy opened the door wider. Her arms were skinny. She was all bone.
``You can come in if you want.''
The room was a table and a bed and lots of nightclub clothes everywhere. There were small plastic bags on the table and a set of scales.
``What did you want'' The gun''''
Peta and Raz had argued about getting a gun. Raz said he could get one but didn't want to. It was Dangerous enough already - Raz's life. He thought Peta was stupid, like a teenager. Peta knew Raz couldn't get a gun despite all his dealer connections which was why he kept on at him to produce one. He never imagined one would appear. What he wanted more than anything was to kiss Raz's girlfriend Troy. But, as far as he knew, Troy didn't even kiss Raz.
``I've given up on guns.'' he told her.
Troy laughed and lit a cigarette.
``How was clubbing'''' he asked.
``Clubbing was fine.''
She blew smoke onto the table surface.
``Would you like to buy some speed'''' she offered.
``I don't know.''
``Speed is all we have.''
``You need money'.''
``We need coffee.''
Through the window sunlight split a cloud open, made her eyes half close. Regarding him with professional sightlessness.
``I can't afford top score now,'' he sighed. ``I can never score.'' He nodded at his cancelled anger.
``Life,''
``That's why I need a gun.''
``Oh. Funny.'' she laughed.
``You know I'm harmless.''
``I know.'' She blew. ``Your problem.''
``I can lend you coffee.'' he decided.
``Nice.''
``Where's Raz''''
``Out with a bunch of Italians. Doing business.''
She looked into a corner, worried. Silently he commiserated for her worrying about Raz.
``When's he coming back''''
``When I make coffee.'' She smiled and it was like the windows with daylight and half closing your eyes with pleasure.
``You're real nice.'' he blurted. ``I mean, to him.''
``Us.''
There was a pause.
``I'll get the coffee.'' he said.
He went back to his room. He slept.
