She looked back at Chad and Mary, who were standing in the doorway. "Wow! Who use to sleep here?" Mary sighed, "We have family that visits sometimes..." Angel smiled, "This is really my room?" Chad smiled, "Of course...Where did you think you would sleep? With us?" Angel's smlie faded, "I am not use to sleeping alone." Mary looked from Chad to Angel. "Angel, will you excuse us for a moment?" As they left the room, Angel crossed the room to sit on the bouncy bed. "Chad, we need to get her a dog. Don't give me that look... We can not have a little girl sleeping in the same bed as us." Chad nodded in agreement. "When do you think would be a proper time to go let her pick out her new best friend?" Once they got to the pet shop, Angel only saw animals that looked like they had been pampered every day... She said no to every animal that Chad and Mary asked about. While walking home, Angel noticed something lying down in an alleyway. She ran to the poor dirty looking thing. When they got closer to it, they thought it might be dead, thanks to the smell. But when Angel touched it, it opened its eyes and licked her hand. Angel laughed, "Can we keep him?" Mary looked over at Chad, "Do you want to be the one to give that dog a bath?" Chad nodded, "It looks like it might be a golden retriever..I had one when I was just a boy.".....Bubbles were all over the bathroom floor, even Chad was covered. Mary and Angel were filling up the food and water bowls up in the kitchen. "So lucky gets to sleep with me?" Mary nodded, "He is your puppy." Chad and lucky came out of the bathroom, Lucky's hair was beautiful after being washed and brushed, he wagged his way over to Angel....Mary gave Angel a kiss on her forehead as she and Chad tucked Angel in. When Mary was about to shut the light out she heard behind her, "Please lord, take care of all I love. Tell my mommy that I will see her again...even if it isn't right now. Thank you for giving me Chad, Mary, and Lucky...I love them." Mary listened as Angel started crying. Mary turned around to see Lucky laying down close to Angel with his head on her, so she could hug him. Mary turned the light out and went to bed...2:35A.M. Chad jumped out of bed, hearing Lucky's bark coming out of Angel's room. He opened her door to the sight of a really big man standing at her window, with a crow bar in his hand. He broke the window open, and reached in to grab a sleeping Angel. Lucky dove out the window and attacked the intruder. Then Angel woke up screaming, "Lucky! Come back! Please don't get hurt like mommy!" Chad noticed that Angel was in tears again. It was silent for the rest of the night as Chad rocked her in his arms... The next morning, Angel walked out onto the front porch, "Lucky! Please?" Mary came outside and picked her up. "Come on, Angel. Let's go inside..." Angel rested her head on Mary's shoulder, "Why did he have to love me so much? That is what got Mommy killed..." Mary looked into Angel's face, "Sweetie, if he didn't love you, then you wouldn't be here..You probably wouldn't even be alive." Angel smiled at her through teary eyes. "He loved me from the moment we got him, didn't he?" Mary nodded, "He will always love you."... Mary's voice trailed off when she heard a familiar bark in the drive way... Angel jumped out of her arms, and saw Lucky standing in the driveway. "Lucky!" She ran to him, as he ran to her. She let her tears soak into his fur as she hugged him. She eased up when he whinced at the pain it caused him when she patted his lower back. She didn't really notice the blood on his fur, until just then. "Mary! Come look at him...He is hurt." As Mary and Chad bandaged Lucky up, Angel held one of his paws, praying, "Please, look after him...Help him be safe..." Chad smiled, "Angel, he is alright. The guy only cut him up a little with the crow bar." Angel looked into Lucky's eyes, "Do you think that my father will try this again?" Chad gasped, "That horrible monster was your own father?" Angel nodded, "That is another reason mommy took care of me." Ten years down the road... Mary and Chad didn't have any other children during their lives, because Angel and Lucky were their pride and joy. continued...
