13. Jennica

I woke up with my eyes still closed with a weird feeling that I haven’t had since I was six years old, just little bit over ten years ago. How could this sense be here now? My body tense when I push myself to sit up. I open my eyes to see Drake sitting on the edge of my bed looking at me with gnawing eyes.
I shriek. “What are you doing in my room?” I scream, pulling the cover up to cover my body. I have clothes on but it feels like instinct to pull up the covers.
Drake’s brows mush together in a questioning glare. “Don’t you remember me?” he asks as he places a hand by her foot. I shake my head, knowing that lying is so much easier. “Liar. I that you remember me, because I scared the crap out of you, when I just placed a hand on your shoulder, you coward while you’re nanny came and got you ready for be. I know that you remember. I saw it when you tense when you woke up.”
I didn’t want to be here with him, I didn’t feel right. It just feels wrong being in the same room that he was in. I just want to get out of this room and never look back, running away from him.
His hand grasps the blanket. “Where are they?” His eyes stab daggers into me. He starts to tug on the blanket but I try to hold on to dear life for it. “Where are they?”
I suck in some air and answer, “They who?” I try to play dumb, knowing that I know who they who are. They mean Alec and his siblings. But I won’t crack under pressure, to give in to this stupid asshole.
He gets up, still holding onto the blanket. “You know who. So don’t play dumb with me.” His voice is ice, freezing cold.
I don’t look at him. I keep my head down, looking at the black nothingness of my comforter. “I don’t know what you mean.” I say through tears. I know that I’m probably going to die from this but I know that I could kill easier than he thinks.
“Alec and his siblings!” he screamed on top of his lungs, ripping the blanket off me. “Those who. They disappeared last night, and they’re not at home. They’re just bringing their mother pain, not me.”
I scramble of the bed trying to stand over by the window. “I don’t know who you’re talking about. I’ve never met anyone named Alec before. I swear!” I hope my family hears me screaming or at least Maria. I know that it’s sunlight but they could at least come up stairs to help.
“They’re not coming for you.” Drake walks around the bed cornering me by my nightstand. He stalks over coming ever so closer to me, and then I see his neck pulsing alive. I lunge at him, sinking my teeth into his neck, sucking out all the blood that I could.
He screams and tries to get out of my hold but he can’t. He’s useless. His feelings, emotions, memories of the past and present come through me, enveloping me. His past memories as a kid living on the street, trying to make it alive, and then Father comes into the picture taking him and raising him as his own. Then another memory comes and it’s that of him killing a man that looks exactly like Alec but older, and Drake just stabs him in the gut repeatedly, over and over, while the older Alec screams for him to stop, but he doesn’t he keeps at it until the older Alec dies.
I let go of his neck, pushing back, to look at Drake who is laying there knocked out from blood lose. I get up, wiping of the blood around my mouth. I need to get out of here. I need to run with Alec and his siblings. I’ve just betrayed my family like no other.
I walk and grab a bag from my closet. I find two of the medium size bags. I move back to my room and pack clothes into it. I know that this is how it’s supposed to be, me leaving my family like this. I need to leave during the day, no more dawdling for me.
Once most of everything is packed, I go to my jewelry collection, grabbing the most expensive stuff and grab my emergency cell phone. I call up my bank and make the transfer of three million from my parents account to one that will leave no traces, hopefully. I go to the bathroom to clean myself off and change my clothes.
I walk out of the bathroom to see Drake still passed out, not moving one bit, which makes me smile a little. I grab all my bags and move over to the picture of Melinda and I, when I was five, and push the back down, which reveals five airplane tickets for tonight, to leave from Chicago to Destiny, Michigan.
I smile a devise smile. Time to leave my family behind, hopefully forever. I run down the stairs and throw my bags into the trunk and leave.
I pull out of the drive way, going as fast as I can. But when I do, I almost run over some kids that are playing in the street. I say my sorry’s and drive away from this neighborhood.

Pulling into Lamina’s driveway, I turn off the car and race up the front steps. I knock on the door, waiting for someone to answer. I felt naked standing out here by myself, knowing that Drake had come into my room and tried to hurt me to get information. I need Alec badly to tell him what happened, to tell him what I saw.
The door opens up a little, showing Lamina. “Jennica?” she says shyly and confused. “What are you doing here?” She opens up the door all they way. The look on her face shows me all.
“I’m here to talk to Alec. We’re not safe out here in the world. Let me in,” I demanded. She moves out the way and swings her arm out, telling me to walk in, and I do. I walk into the small cramped living room, I’m just used to the bigness of my house, but this house has cozy-ness unlike my house.
I turn to her. “Where is he?”
“Basement,” she answers, pointing towards the hallway. “The door that is right before the kitchen.” And I nod, following the directions that she has told me. I walk down the hallway.
I see the last door and stop before I enter the domain of the basement. I could feel his presence down there and it felt as if he was really happy, so I push myself down the stairs, walking slowly, afraid of him wondering why I’m here and not at the spot.
Once downstairs, I see Alec sitting on the couch next to a girl of the age of ten or twelve give or take, and I notice Raed on the other couch, lounging watching T.V. I feel bad for breaking up this precious moment but it’s important, and there’s no time to waste.
“Alec,” I say, “we need to talk.” My voice resounds off the walls, and I startle everyone except for the little girl who gives me a really sweet smile that seems to say hi. I wave at her and she waves back.
Alec gets up and walks over to me, grasping my arm pulling me away from what seems to be his siblings. We walk into what looks like a kitchen being remodeled. “What are you doing here?” he says immediately. His brows mush together making one line, lips taut into a single line.
I debate with myself if I should just give it to him straight, or just let him guess, but that would be wasting time, which seems to be precious in this time of need. “Drake attacked me…” I start telling him the whole thing, how it started and how it ended. I felt sorry for myself but I had to tell him.
After I was done, he looked at me as if I’m crazy, but then it looked as if he contemplated it in his head, by walking back and forth, hand at his lips, him whispering to himself. But all I know is that something sparks in his eyes and he looks at me with full intent.
“What is it?” I ask sheepishly.
“Well, before I say anything else, I have to call Lamina down her so she could listen to what I had to say. I still haven’t told her what happened last night and I want to tell you both.” He looks at me before walking out of the entrance. “And then you will tell her what happened this morning.”
And with that he walked out the door, not even hesitating. I do I tell Lamina. I barely know her and on top of it, when at school, I just blew her off as I do with every other super natural that went there. I shake my head in frustration. But one good thing that was coming out of this was that I was going to learn what happened last night.
When Alec and Lamina walked into the room, they both stared at me intently, which gave me the creeps. I turn my attention to Alec and raise a brow. He nods at my questioning glare and got into this story of the night before.
I stood there leaning up against the wall listening. My mind starts to wander off until I heard something that was meant for me. I stop my wandering mind and look Alec in the eyes. “What did you just say?”
He looks back at me and his smile quavered. “I said, ‘Maria told me something about you…”—he stops as if he couldn’t finish the sentence—“…that you’re her daughter.”
His words echo throughout my brain. It’s like a slap across my face that I still haven’t comprehended just yet. It spins around in my head for a little bit and then it slams into me as if it were a dart going to its target. I start to crumble in on myself as if a paper folding over onto itself. How the hell does that equal up?
I fall onto my knees and my hands rush up to my face covering it as I begin to cry. Tears flood my face as I try to piece everything together. Maria’s my mother, but if that’s true, that means I’m a dhampir not a Tru vampire. How the hell does that equal up? How does that equal that I have a draw to blood? How the hell? I’m just flabbergasted, confused, dumbfounded, I don’t know how to explain it but I feel as if I’m not whole any more that a big piece of my upbringing just disappeared as Alec said those words.
I hear footsteps come to me, wrapping its arms around me, hugging me, whispering gentle words of comfort, but I don’t know what they say. They seem to be so distant, even the touches feel distant as if it were thousands of miles away from me. I try to listen to this calming voice but my mind tells me no, that I have to pay attention to what’s in front of me.
We all have to get out of this town, out of this state, to the only protection that I know of. We have to get to Destiny, Michigan. All of us need to get there within tonight, before the night settles, before someone finds Drake.
With this, I shake whatever is in me and get my head back into place. “We have to leave,” I cut off the calming voice. “We need to leave now.” My voice reverberates of the walls.
Alec pushes me off his shoulder and looks me in the eyes. “Are you sure all of us need to leave?” His voice sounds strong like a lighthouse in stormy seas.
I nod, looking up at Lamina. Her eyes are big and she nods, knowing what I’m about to say. “We need to get the others ready. I’m ready to leave now too.” I look back at Alec who is looking to me with bright unanswered eyes telling me he understands.
I get up and walk a little distance away. I hear him get up off the ground and reaches out for me. I turn around walking into his outstretched hand. I look into his unyielding eyes and kiss him. I kiss him fiercely as if it is, are last one before we lose each other in this unrelenting battle of trying to love each other.
He kisses back, hands tangling in my hair; both of our breaths become sharp. My hands fan out from his face to his chest, to his hair to his back as if I can’t get his image out of my touch. That it’s impossible, that my body is not letting me do this. But than I feel his one hand trail down my back, sending shock waves throughout my body, his fingers grip the end of my shirt and pull it off. I know that I shouldn’t do this, that I shouldn’t give it to him, but right now, all I know is that if I don’t I’m going to regret it till the day I die.
I let him take my shirt of me, leaving me in my bra and pants. I push him back, closing to door while doing it. His hands find the small of my back, pressing on it, I move closer to him, mending our bodies together, while his hands rest on my butt.
I pull back a little to look him in the eyes and let my hands go down his chest until I find the end of his shirt. I grip my fingers on the fabric and start to pull up. He lifts his hands up, pulling the shirt off with ease, while I stand there in awe of his muscles. They bulge just right. His body is perfect.
I gasp at the perfect length of his abs, of how the seem to form symmetrically together beautifully. I know that a smile is on my face but I don’t I hid it. Instead I go up to him again and kiss him.
He presses on me, pushing me back up to the counter. I laugh a little but kiss him even more. His fingers thumb with my button on my pants and I’m ready to give it to him. To let him have it.
Within a second I’m standing next I’m on top of our clothes on the floor looking up into his hollowed out green eyes smiling longingly into them. He stares into mine, while hovering over me, not putting so much pressure on me.
“Are you sure?” he asks, trailing a finger up and down my rip cage. I laugh a little and grip his face in my hands and kiss him. “Yes,” I whisper.
And lying on the floor of the during-the-process-of-remodeled-kitchen, I let him have me for my second time.

Feeling a cold draft, I start to wake up out of a nap. I push myself up on my elbows and look towards the door. I see Lamina standing there with a flabbergasted look on her face. Her mouth’s hanging open, eyes wide as hell, with a pure shock look on her face which made me laugh.
“What are you laughing at?” she says, giving a look comparable to the devils. “Where the hell, were you too?”
I look at her. “Here,” I say and look down at myself. I feel pink raise on my face. I’m naked talking in front of Lamina, a girl that I barely know, with the man of my dreams laying next to me sleeping. Shit. I had totally forgotten of why I’m laying here.
“Um…”I begin,”…excuse me. Can you leave for a quick second?” She nods, turning and walk out the door. I shake my head in little disgust of myself. But I’m actually happy that I’ve just done it with him. A smile creeps across my face. I get up,, grabbing clothes and seeing them ruin, I walk to the door and ask Lamina if I could borrow something to wear and she laughs like its nothing and walks away.
I stand there, getting cold, and wait for Lamina to hurry. I wait for a little longer getting tired. My foot taps the linoleum floor as I wait and I think of what Alec said about Maria as my mother.
If she was my mother than that means that I’m a dhampir. Dhampirs don’t drink blood; they’re like vampires but without the whole blood drinking problem. But I’ve already drunk blood. How does this all equal out? What am…?
Lamina walks in with clothes. I smile to her sweetly, she is truly nice, and maybe I’ve been wrong for these past years about her. I need to get to know people before judging them, but that was how I was raise, it was second nature. Now I have to break that second nature and create a new one.
“Thanks,” I say, smiling sweetly. She nods her welcome, handing me the jeans, blouse and socks. I smile at the little effort. She turns and leaves. After that I get dressed and go by Alec to wake him so that we could get out of here finally.
I let my hand rest on his bare shoulder, its muscles tense as I let my hand rest there and go back to relaxation as if he knows that it’s me. I smile at the thought. But I shake him a little, trying to get him to wake up, he snores a little and then I full out push him.
He falls to the floor; he was not lying on his side anymore. It works. He’s startle and looks around, getting oriented back into wake up mode, no more sleepy time. He blinks a couple of times and then smiles as if he sees me for the first time.
“Wake up sleepy head.” I get up form kneeling and walk over to the door. “Hurry up, we have to leave.” And I walk out into the hallway, where Lamina stands looking at me with smiling eyes, but her lips don’t form one, which is really weird.
“So he’s awake?” she questions. I nod and walk downs the hallway. I walk into the living room, where Raed and the little girl who waved to me sit on the couch watching the last bit of television they’re going to watch for a while. I go sit next to the girl and smile.
She turns her head to me and smiles a huge grin that takes over her face. And the smile makes me feel joy and happy thoughts. “What’s your name?” I ask looking into those same hollowed out green eyes that are just like Alec’s.
“My name is Trina.” She smiles again. “What’s yours?”
I laugh a little. “Mine is Jennica.” And I see her look at me weird and I smile. “I know weird name.” And she laughs at that. “How old are you?”
She looks at me and then back at the T.V. to make sure the show isn’t back on. “I’m ten,” she says with enthusiasm. Her face seems so much younger but then when you look into her eyes you could see the age of her. But her features are still soft as if she’s not maturing like the other students. I smile.
Alec walks into the room. “Let’s go. Time to leave.” He sounds like a drill sergeant and I understand how that is. We all get up without disobeying his words. We walk up the stairs, until we hear a crash upstairs that stops all of us, especially me, since I was in front.
I turn to them, dumbfounded. And then Lamina steps in, “Follow me.” She turns around the corner by the kitchen and we follow her like she says. We go down the hall until she stops in front of the end of the hall.
Alec looks pissed. “Where to now?” he says in a pessimist tone.
Lamina looks at him and shakes her head when she presses the wall, and the wall slides to the right, creating a hole in it. “Get in!” Her tone seems to make all of us move. Once all of us are in, she closes the door right when I see Drake walks out of the stairwell and looks me directly in the eyes and point at me and then move his finger over his throat, as if threatening me.
Lamina sees what happens and looks at us and waves her hands for us to get moving. We do, we move down the hallway until there is just a ladder at the end. “Where do we go?” my voice starts to sound pessimistic as well.
Lamina shakes her head at me and walks to the ladder. She starts to climb it up, up until she reaches to very top. I bellow at the height and she pushes open what look to be a sewer well. “Let’s go they could figure that thing opens any…”
She was cut off by the door opening. Raed picks up Trina in his arms as she protests and climbs the ladder as if hell’s fury is on him, in which it was sort of true. I follow next climbing up to him almost until my face was by his butt.
Alec starts to climb with everyone’s bag, except for mine. Shit! I think, but or well. Read gets up handing Trina to Lamina and moves out of the tunnel as I look down to see the werewolves trying to gnaw at all of us, but I look back up and push myself up the rest of the ladder and into the fresh air.
Once on the ground, I got my breathing back to normal. I heard the sewer cap put back on to the sewer tunnel. I sigh of relief. I look over at who’s here and who isn’t. Everyone is counted for and then Lamina waves her hand as she walks over to what seems to be more forest, but it’s a barn with a trail.
Alec looks at the wreathen barn as its shambles are hanging on to hinges, while it slants dominantly to the right, and then he looks over to the left where the trail is and studies it from afar. “We won’t get far until we die,” he says matter-of-factly.
“That’s where you’re wrong,” Lamina excuses. She walks over to the barn and opens the doors and there’s a 1965 Dodge Charger. “It has a full tank of gas with three more gallons of gas in the back and it runs like a beauty. “Where just outside of Griffith. But we need to leave fast. Get in!”
We all scurry over to her hope in are last and final way of hope. Trina, Raed, and I are in the back, while Alec sits in the passenger side and Lamina drives her car.
Lamina’s face is that of ultimately shining brilliantly, the glow is like that of a street lamp. I smile for her happy…but that ends shortly. Lamina tries to start the car but it doesn’t want to start, it’s as if it were out of gas. Alec looks frustrated at the new outcome.
“Is it out of gas,” he says.
She looks at the dial and shakes her head. “It’s a full a tank.”
“Is there like a wire loose in the engine,” I chirp, knowing I’m going to get weird looks from everyone because I’m a girl who knows her cars and how to wire them probably. But Lamina nods and gets out of the car popping the hood. She screams of annoyance.
“You’re right,” she says to me. I laugh. I just didn’t know how I knew but she hooked it back up. The hood slams back shut and she runs around the car and starts the car. It putters a little and then it comes alive.
We all at once let out a breath of relief, knowing that we’re all going to die here tonight if it weren’t for me and my quick thinking. She puts the car into drive and floors it. We’re all shot forward and pulled back form the seatbelts. Our necks start to hurt and then. She drives down the path.
“Get to the expressway, and get us to O’Hare as fast as you can.” My voice is strong while I’m feeling like a weak piece of shit.
