What is a Hedge Witch?
I'm not a big blogger, and just don't get the (spilling your guts) all over the internet for everyone to know your business... So I decided to turn this little blog spot into a kind of a spot to put odd's and ends, spells etc... lol
Also, Please let me say, I'm not much into the "Title Thing" also. When filling out my little space on the internet here on PaganSpace I had put Witch. But then everyone keep emailing asking what kind of Witch are you? So after doing a little research on the different types of Witch's the Title of a Hedge Witch kind of fit the bill as they say... Then I started getting a lot of emails asking what is a Hedge Witch... So, I figured this would be a great little spot for all this.. :-) So, here goes.. LOL...
As for what a Hedge Witch is to me, (this is just my opinion), I guess the best way to describe it would be: a eclectic witch who neither belongs to a coven nor tradition and practices in a solitary fashion, a person that relies upon self-study, personal discernment, and intuition, does not claim to be initiated, leads a life similar to the ancient village witch who was called upon for spells and healing potions by the local people, a witch that practices herbalism, magic, wild-crafting, and many different forms of healing and spell-working.
Hedge witches are generally solitary and unconcerned with overly formal magickal workings (99 yards of ritual as I say lol), preferring more simple folk (nature based) magic.
I personally believe in the “keep it simple” rule.. Magick comes from within and not from how many candles you light or how much your wand cost, those are just tools. Real magickal power starts within your soul and the purity of your heart.
The last gathering I went to (lol) it was more like a fashion show, let's just say it was to funny. I could not help but laugh and shake my head at things being said like: "Oh look at me, I paid $500.00 for my robe, I just have so much magickal power now", and "Oh, my wand cost $300.00 and is jewel increased, boy i can really Zap someone now"... The little clicks (groups) had the bling and the bragging going on... I swear I felt like I was back in high school with the preppy kids bragging about their (back then) $100 tenny shoes.. lol Now, granted, (before I get a 101 crazy emails), not all gatherings are like that, but thus far, all the ones I've personally attended were. So, I kind of like my solitary thing, I know what I can do and can't do.
Oh, and while I'm on my soap box here, lol, don't get me started on all the zillion and one "I'm certified in this and that".. lol.. Everyone has become so darn "TITLE" happy these days. Ok, jumping off my soap box now.. lol..
Bottom line, honey I don't care how may titles you have, how much you paid for something, how flashy it is, or how many what-evers it has. If you don't have the magick within your soul and the purity of heart, it ain't gonna work, and it be's just a toy.

I was digging through my ga-zillion books (lol) the other day and ran across this... It is from Raven Grimassi's book, "Encyclopedia of Wicca & WitchCraft" page 179.. It's pretty much the same as above, but a tad diff.
A shout out to Raven Grimassi, Big Thanks for wonderful books, I have learned so much from them. Also, I hope you don't mind me quoting you here..
Hedge Witch: is a term for a Witch who practices in a solitary fashion and does not belong to a coven or tradition; typically such an individual does not claim to have been initiated. He or she relies upon self-study, personal discernment, and intuition. In many ways a Hedge Witch is like the old village Witch who lived a solitary life but was called upon for spells and healing potions by the local folks.
The Hedge Witch commonly works with his or her familiar spirit, and incorporates the use of herbs, trance, and shamanic techniques such as drumming to induce altered states of consciousness. The Hedge Witch is usually very involved with working for the ecology of the planet, and tries to use only natural objects and materials for ritual and magickal purposes.
Other names for a Hedge Witch, is Green Witch, Wild Witch, Nature Witch.
